The Keep-in-Touch system

چکیده
We all have a basic need to communicate with family and friends. Message-based communication, based on the written word has been important since earliest civilisations. More recently, email has been a killer application of the internet and SMS the corresponding winner for mobile telephony, precisely because they are message-based and asynchronous. They complement the critical direct communication by enabling people to send messages to each other. When a family lives together in a single house, they still have messaging needs, as reflected in such technologies as the notepad on the fridge. When an extended family is distributed (as nearly all are) the messaging needs can, in fact, intensify and become more complex. They need to go beyond the notepad on the fridge, to systems that are asynchronous in time and space since extended families are usually distributed in different houses, operate on different schedules and are even separated by time-zones. There are also many, potentially important possibilities for message-based communication about status and presence. Asynchronous messaging has the potential to play an important role in supporting communication and maintaining intimacy within family units. In this paper we describe the Keep-in-Touch (KIT) system which provides a messaging appliance that makes it easy for family members to leave audio messages for each other within the home and across distributed family homes. This project crosses the boundaries of many areas of pervasive and ubiquitous computing: ambient information displays, natural user interfaces, information appliances, zero configuration and maintenance, high robustness and reliability (the ‘information toaster’ scenario), privacy, and social acceptability.

The Milling of Metalsthrough Adaptive Neuro-FuzzyInference System (ANFIS) for non-touch Measuring of the Temperature to Reduce Coolant
In this paper, an innovated method is used for cooling Milling zone of Stainless Steel via Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) using non-touch laser thermometer for non-touch measuring of the temperature. This method is economically appropriate because of its optimization in using coolant. In comparison to the ways which were designed to optimize the ratio of coolant, this method is t...
متن کاملThe Value of Touch Preparation for Rapid Diagnosis of Brain Tumors as an Intraoperative Consultation
Background: The touch preparation technique is an accurate and rapid method, and when used as intraoperative consultation examination technique it preserves a good amount of tissue for paraffin embedded sections. This study aimed at examining the accuracy of the touch preparation technique by comparing its diagnosis with that of final pathological diagnosis made by microscopic examinations. ...
متن کاملThe ‘Keep In Touch’ Intergenerational Communication System
In this paper, we briefly describe the design and implementation of the “Keep in Touch” (KiT) intergenerational communications system. The KiT system is a communications appliance aimed to support low-overhead, easy to use inter-household messaging and conferencing between family members and close friends. We discuss the original audio-messaging implementation of KiT and extensions to photo mes...

Background: Delayed awakening is one of the biggest challenges after general anesthesia and surgery. Hypothermia is common after coronary artery bypass surgery, and even mild hypothermia can cause severe complications after surgery. It is important to know the effective methods in accelerating awakening and correcting hypothermia. Materials and Methods: In this randomized clinical trial, Warm T...

Background: Pain has physiological and psychological effects on a child's life and various body systems. Tactile stimulation affects the central nervous system and releases analgesic drugs resulting in the inhibition of pain. Aim: The main purpose of this study was effect of touch on the intensity and duration of pain during venipuncture in school-age children. Methods: This clinical trial was ...
متن کاملNeuronal basis of tactile sense in the rat whisker system
Using their whiskers, rats have tactile capacities rivaling those of the human with our fingertips. We have carried out experiments to explore how neurons encode touch signals to build up a central representation. Touch signals begin with the receptors in the follicle of each whisker and can be traced to a columnar module in somatosensory cortex that is connected with the same whisker: the well...
